Quantum Computing Trends and Prospects(量子コンピュータの動向と展望 英語版)
2025年01月15日 Advanced Technology Laboratory, Hideyuki MASE / Yoshihiro MINO / Kazuo WATANABE / Ayako FUJIMURA
This report comprehensively captures the current state and evolving trends of quantum computing technology, offers a forward-looking perspective, and outlines action plans for companies to consider.
The global race to harness the potential and future opportunities of quantum computers is intensifying. While the adoption of superconducting and trapped ion quantum computers is advancing, other approaches, such as semiconductors (silicon), neutral atoms (cold atoms), and photonics, are also attracting significant attention. In 2023, basic research on quantum error correction was published by prominent companies like Google and QuEra (a US-based quantum startup). From the establishment of these foundational technologies to the challenges of scaling, the progress in quantum computing technology has been nothing short of extraordinary.
Collaborative research and pilot projects involving industry, government, and academia are flourishing, particularly in sectors such as finance, chemistry, information technology, and manufacturing. However, current quantum computers have not yet demonstrated a clear advantage over classical computers due to hardware limitations (including the number of qubits and error correction capabilities). In the absence of significant breakthroughs and progress, companies may adopt a more cautious approach towards investing in quantum computing, leading to a diversification of strategies.
It is anticipated that the maturation of quantum computers will require a medium to long-term timeframe. Nevertheless, it is prudent for user companies to persist in investing in human resource development and research activities with a vision towards the future. Specifically, this involves identifying promising players (such as quantum startups), exploring potential future joint ventures, and incorporating suitable use cases into academic projects.
We sincerely hope that this report will aid readers in formulating business strategies that consider the uncertain future of quantum computing.
