— Construction industry should use regeneration to add value, establish links with growth sectors

The construction industry will play a major role in urban development and disaster prevention work as part of full-scale regeneration work in the wake of the Great East Japan Earthquake. However, the construction market has shrunk considerably since the time of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and, owing to workforce reduction and inflexibility, productivity has fallen. This report considers how the construction industry, while catering to the immediate demand for regeneration, can use this demand as a stepping stone to becoming a higher value-added and growth industry and what measures it should adopt to this end, in terms of labor and equipment.
