JRI Signs Cooperative Agreement on Research & Consulting With
Samsung Economic Research Institute

February 21, 2006

The Japan Research Institute, Limited
Samsung Economic Research Institute

The Japan Research Institute, Limited ("JRI"; President: Shunichi Okuyama; Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) and Samsung Economic Research Institute ("SERI"; President: Ku-Hyun Jung; Head office: Seoul, Republic of Korea), a think tank affiliated to the Samsung Group, have concluded a cooperative agreement with a view to building a collaborative relationship in the research and consulting business.

The increasingly global nature of economic activity means that think tanks and consulting firms likewise need to pursue a global expansion of the sphere of their activities. In addition to establishing their own overseas bases, many firms believe that building collaborative relationships with partners who are already well established in major developed countries is an efficient strategy for meeting this need and a highly effective way of forming and strengthening information networks.
As JRI and SERI shared this view and policy, and judged each other to be suitable as prospective partners, it was decided that the two firms would enter into a cooperative agreement. This is SERI's first cooperative agreement with a think tank outside Korea.

The major activities covered by the agreement are:
(1) The exchange of research results and information
(2) The pursuit of research/business on commission and jointly
(3) The exchange of information relating to consulting work
(4) Collaboration on websites
(5) Human exchange
(6) The hosting of joint seminars, etc.

As a specific project falling into category (2) above, JRI and SERI are planning to launch a joint research project in the first half of 2006 and are currently discussing the theme to be selected, etc. JRI and SERI intend to add to the above list of activities and expand the content of the agreement as and when necessary.
