The Japan Research Institute, Limited (President: Yasuyuki Kimoto; Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; "JRI") and Center for Information & Consultation for the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the most famous academic research organization for natural sciences and technology in the People's Republic of China (Director: Liu Keli; Headquarters: Zhongguancun, Haidian-qu, Beijing; "Center for Information & Consultation for CAS") sign MOU of intent regarding collaboration in the environment and energy fields in China. JRI will be the first institution to enter into a tie-up with the CAS Information Consultancy Center in the environment and energy fields. * The signing ceremony will be held at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing at 4:30 p.m. (local time) on Thursday, September 27, 2007.

In its 11th 5-year Plan (2006-2010), the Chinese government has positioned the creation of an environmentally conscious society as a key policy objective and has set specific numerical targets for the improvement of energy efficiency and the reduction of emissions of environment pollutants. The Japanese government has also indicated its interest in working with China to find solutions to environment and energy problems. Given these developments, analysts expect to see an increasing number of tie-ups between Japanese and Chinese private-sector business enterprises in the environment and energy fields.

Against this backdrop, the Center for Information & Consultation for CAS and JRI plan to draw on the Center for Information & Consultation for CAS's technological expertise and its wide-ranging network within China, which includes universities, research institutions and business enterprises and JRI's track record in the proposal of policies and the establishment of business entities and its network of connections with Japanese companies, and to collaborate in the following areas:

(1) Joint survey, research, dissemination of information and proposal of policies on environment issues and energy in China
(2) The introduction in their own country of environment and energy technologies developed in the other country
(3) The establishment of businesses involving partnerships between Japanese and Chinese companies in the environment and energy fields

Of the above, (3) will target Japanese companies planning to develop business in China. JRI and the Center for Information & Consultation are planning projects to help such Japanese companies identify Chinese companies that may be suitable as partners, form business alliances and establish businesses.
